Cablevision’s Optimum Email Slows Down Confirmed

Aired: July 16th, 2010

Cablevision issued a statement at 11 am this morning confirming that they are experiencing technical issues with their internet service provider’s email portal.

Cablevision’s Sarah Chaikin issued the following statement:

“Cablevision is experiencing technical issues that have resulted in e-mail delays and e-mail access issues for some customers. We have located the problem and expect to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers, and we will update this announcement as more information becomes available.”

Cablevision customers has complained that they haven’t been able to check their optonline email since Thursday morning. Cablevision did not state of what is causing the email portal to slow down. It is uncertain if the email service is available via POP3/IMAP.

Technical analysts at Vidgle believe that Cablevision has fallen victim to a DoS, denial of service, attack. A DoS attack is when an attacker (or a computer infected via a virus) constantly uses resources of a server constantly and causes users to have a slow or unresponsive page requests.

The last big DoS attack was on Facebook and Twitter on the very same day in 2009.

There is no estimate time when the email service will become available again.
