ANIME INDUSTRY PIONEER DEAD

Aired: April 20th, 2010

Late Sunday night it was confirmed a leading pioneer in the animation industry, Carl Macek, died Saturday of heart attack at the age of 58.

Macek started a long association with anime in 1984 when he started working with Harmony Gold USA, to devolope the very popular anime series Robotech. After leaving Harmony Gold he whent on to co-create Streamline Picture, which dubbed a lot of anime films including Akira, Fist of the North Star, and Laputa. Macek also produced the original English dub of the hit Miyazaki film My Neighbor Totoro. Macek was still instrumental till this day with helping bring Naruto and Bleach to western shores.

Macek was not only a lover of anime but American animation as well. He helped sell the original Ren and Stimpy to Nickelodeon in the early 90’s. Macek also did promotional work on sci-fi films such as Star Wars and Alien.

But we must sit back and wonder. What would the anime industry be today without all his work.
